Dave Comins (co-host)

Among my many over-qualifications for leading the Bluegrass & Beyond jam are over 30 years of guitar finger-picking, 20 years of bluegrass banjo and 10 years of dobro picking - as well as being a legend in my own mind.

All this, and I’m not even 25 yet! (don't believe me... look at this...)

Okay, so it was taken 30 years ago!

In 1976-7, I attended the Royal Academy of Music in London while still in architecture school, studying the relationship between music, poetry and architecture. This, of course, has nothing to do with either bluegrass or jam leading, but it sounds really impressive - at least to me!

During the 80's, I studied banjo with both Tony Trischka and Bill Keith - visiting the latter at his home in Woodstock, N.Y. (with co-host Bill Giles) several times.

Along with Bill, I attended the first two Tennessee Banjo Institutes in 1988 and 1990 - these were the predecessors of the current banjo and jam camp phenomenon - and included banjo musicians from the bluegrass, old-time, Irish and classic traditions.

In November 2009 and 2011, I travelled to Nashville to attend Rob Icke's 3rd and 5th annual ResoSummits - in an attempt to finally get serious about the resonator guitar.

Bill Giles, Sarah Galloway and myself have been performing in NYC for 11 years - originally in the company of Norris Bennett (now of the Ebony Hillbillies), and recently, with our newest co-host AJ Bender - often performing his original songs along with our own eclectic mix of rock and roots music.

For those of you who have heard me sing, don’t worry - my wife
Sarah Galloway - Bluegrass + Beyond poster designer,  and singer extraordinaire - will usually be in attendance to make me sound a whole lot better.
